House of 1000 Corpses 2003 Sid Haig as Captain Spaulding

house of 1000 corpses clown

An animated musical "sidequel" released in 2009, The Haunted World of El Superbeasto, is also part of the tale. After he leaves the brothel, Wydell threatens Charlie to give up the Fireflys. With the help of the "Unholy Two," the sheriff takes the family back to the Firefly house where Wydell tortures them, using similar methods they used on their own victims. He nails Otis' hands to his chair and staples crime-scene photographs to Otis's and Baby's stomachs, then he beats and shocks Captain Spaulding and Otis with a cattle prod and taunts Baby about the death of her mother. At the motel, Otis and Baby take a musical group called Banjo and Sullivan hostage in their room, and Otis shoots the roadie when he returns. Meanwhile, Baby's father, Captain Spaulding, decides to rendezvous with Baby and Otis.

Dr. Satan might not be real

This is the same studio that previewed the film and decided to kick Zombie and his crew to the curb. It’s interesting what some time can do to a film’s reputation, and in this review, I’ll discuss the horror community’s collective journey to loving and appreciating this gem of a movie. People tend to be their own worst critics — although critics have plenty of scathing things to say about House of 1000 Corpses. While House of 1000 Corpses is brilliant to many, it was, as mentioned earlier, Zombie's directorial debut, so he's bound to look back and find issues with it. This is probably exacerbated by the fact that he took a different artistic approach to the following Firefly movies. No matter how Zombie feels, however, House of 1000 Corpses continues to make Halloween must-watch lists every year.

Videos2

Even so, it's not as though the studio was blindsided by the film Zombie cooked up. Speaking to The AV Club in 2005, the director explained that he was very honest about his intentions when the project was coming together. Luckily, the intervening years had only sharpened House of 1,000 Corpses’ flavor. “It’s a pre-9/11 film, released to a post-9/11 audience, that somehow really handily preempts all these themes we had suddenly become obsessed with in our movies,” Martin said. Surveillance, captivity, revenge, paranoia, culture clash—it was all in there. A nasty little stink bomb of a grindhouse slasher, the “plot” of House of 1,000 Corpses, if it can be called that, concerns four kids (including a pre-Office Rainn Wilson) who get lost on the backroads of America while searching for a local legend named Dr. Satan.

Captain Spaulding

Manes was introduced to House of 1,000 Corpses while playing Tubi roulette a few years ago, and was instantly drawn to how the movie reveled in its own wickedness. The movie mutated on the fly, the scenes mercury in Zombie’s hands as he showed up each morning brimming with new ideas—new pages for the cast to memorize, new sets for the crew to construct. Moseley himself was one of them, having already collected a number of horror credits, including The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, the Night of the Living Dead remake, and Army of Darkness.

Sid Haig Dies: ‘House Of 1000 Corpses’ Horror Icon Was 80.

House of 1000 Corpses won't go down in history as the most commercially successful horror movie of all time, nor the most critically acclaimed. This hardcore horror film's style plays like a terrifying music video, providing a roller coaster ride of gruesomely colorful scenes. To the squeamish, this movie can come off as shocking, repulsive, and downright unwatchable, due to its gory nature. It does, after all, contain torturous mental abuse, bloody murder, and, for good measure, necrophilia.

For Mama Firefly, Zombie turned to Karen Black of Easy Rider and Five Easy Pieces fame. Sid Haig, a cult film legend known for his work in Spider Baby and Foxy Brown, was tapped to play the gonzo clown Captain Spaulding. The Devil's Rejects and 3 from Hell have since rounded out the trilogy, so this might come as a surprise to many fans. But Zombie knew the troubles that accompany getting a movie funded, and as the filmmaker explained in a 2013 interview, "If someone's willing to put up that money and make your film happen, you really can't look that gift horse in the mouth."

The best films aren’t always the ones with the best writing, acting, or directing. I want a film to have a soul that transcends the story and all its participants. I want a story I’ll remember because I had never seen anything else quite like it. CORPSES checks all of those boxes for me and continues to with each viewing. I’ve read recently that Zombie himself struggles to look back fondly on the film, due largely to the rough-and-tumble experience of making it, and the negative reception that followed its release.

Take Dr. Satan (Walter Phelan), hands down one of the most interesting beings in the Firefly trilogy. The cyborg scientist appears briefly in the movie, but will haunt viewers' nightmares forever, even if he doesn't necessarily fit in with the style of subsequent flicks. He directs Jerry Goldsmith, Bill Hudley, Denise Willis, and Mary Knowles in the direction of the Firefly house, where they are terrorized by the Fireflies, especially Baby and Otis. When police Lt. George Wydell goes looking for them after Denise's father Don reports them missing, He directs him to the house as well, where Wydell, Willis, Deputy Steve Nash are killed.

The interviewer says that average clowns usually aren't convicted of 38 murders, like Spaulding was, causing him to laugh hysterically. Shortly after, a breaking news bulletin announces that Captain Spaulding was executed via lethal injection. On May 18, 1978,[a] Texas Sheriff John Quincey Wydell and a large posse of state troopers issue a search and destroy mission on the Firefly family, who are responsible for over 75 homicides and disappearances over the past several years. Rufus is killed and Mother Firefly is taken into custody while Otis and Baby escape. They steal a car, kill the driver, and go to Kahiki Palms, a run-down motel.

The plot centers on a group of teenagers who are kidnapped and tortured by a psychotic family during Halloween after traveling across the country to write a book. "Corpses" finished up its run with $12.6 million domestically and $4.1 million internationally, for a grand total of $16.8 million. Now, that wouldn't have covered Universal's initial investment, but since Lionsgate scooped it up on a deal, the film did well for them. Particularly since untold scores of fans later discovered the movie on home video, with various DVD and Blu-ray releases arriving over the years to further add to Lionsgates's profit margins.

Zombie’s debut presents a filmmaker still learning the process, and the movie benefits greatly from it. The actors are given plenty of room to flesh out their characters, and career-defining performances are given by genre veterans such as Bill Moseley (The Devil’s Rejects). This film takes risks in a way that Zombie’s following films would not and in result has a playful energy that few movies have replicated. I have a distinct memory of seeing the trailer for the movie playing in the lobby of my childhood local theater, and even then I was both terrified and undeniably intrigued by the whole spectacle. I was much too young to see HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES in theaters, but my older brother bought the movie on DVD as soon as it was released, and I couldn’t wait to point my eyeballs at it. I’ll never forget the first time my brothers and I sat down and watched the movie together.

Gilberts Chowder House, Portland Menu, Reviews 602, Photos 103

gilberts chowder house

A quaint New England style restaurant overlooking Casco Bay on Commercial Street. We offer five delicious types to choose from including; clam, fish, corn, seafood and seafood chili. We also have a variety of seafood entrees that will satisfy every hungry patron. Come experience for yourself what fresh from the ocean seafood tastes like and let our servers take care of you. The lobster came on a sweet, buttery toasted slice of bread, which let the lobster shine without introducing too many other flavors.

Best of Portland

I guarantee you won’t be leaving any behind, it is that good, and the ahi is that fresh. The chips are great as well, and I confirmed that they are baked in-house, which is why they tasted so good. Well-known chowder house has a dinerlike interior & a patio overlooking Custom House Wharf.

TIME HONORED

Gilbert’s Chowder House has proudly served the people of Portland and its visitors on the waterfront for years. Find places to stay, things to do, restaurants, shops, group meeting services, venues, and much more.

I can also confirm that it is still amazing and I enjoyed it just as much on my trip back in 2022. Check it out if you are driving PCH and let me know what you think in the comments. Sam’s is located right on Pacific Coast Highway in the north part of Half Moon Bay. You can’t miss it while driving down the coast as it is the one with the large sign and packed parking lot. I was able to walk over from my hotel, so I didn’t utilize the parking, and after a short wait, I was shown to a table.

Gilberts Chowder House Reviews

gilberts chowder house

Our restaurant was born in Kansas City, a destination once known as the 'Paris of the Plains' because of its widespread penchant for bootlegging during Prohibition. With this under our belts, we craft and serve the finest cocktails, wines and more -- the perfect complement to an exceptional meal. Whether you’re on the hunt for date night restaurants, somewhere to celebrate special occasions or just a great meal, J. Gilbert’s delivers a fine dining meal in a down-to-earth atmosphere. And true to our Midwestern values, dishes always include the sides.

It is different than a Boston lobster roll but good in its own, West Coast way. When you are staying next to a restaurant that always has a full parking lot, then you know it must be good. That was the case for Sam’s Chowder House in Half Moon Bay, which I visited on the last night I was in town, staying next door at Beach House – Half Moon Bay. It was a busy Friday night with live music playing and everyone talking and having a great time. I sat down and quickly ordered the lobster roll, which The Today Show called one of the five best sandwiches in America. Here is all the info from that visit and my return to Sams in 2022.

There were good sized pieces of clams in the chowder as well, which was fantastic, and the bacon added a robust flavor to make it a solid chowder. If oysters are on the menu at somewhere that I trust, then I have a hard time not ordering them. I already had a full meal ordered, so I just tried the two most popular kind, the Kumamoto and the Point Reyes oyster. I would say the Kumamoto is better as it has more flavor, but they are both good. This dish has ample portions of melt in your mouth ahi that has been marinated in soy sauce, sesame oil, and green onion. I was surprised by how much ahi they gave you as it could easily be shared with two people.

When it comes to upholding the standards of honest midwestern cuisine, no other steakhouse comes close.

I was impressed by how much lobster I got with the sandwich; it was worth the price paid. I usually don’t like coleslaw, but I found myself eating it with the lobster pieces as it added a complementary flavor. I ate the roll slow to savor every bite of the lobster, and it is something I would come back to Half Moon Bay for.

I like to order unique things when I see them on the menu, so I went with this dish since I hadn’t seen anything like it before. I didn’t know what to expect, but I was impressed with the smooth, creamy taste the olive oil added, and the sea salt just brought out the flavors of the ice cream. The chowder is one of the most popular items at Sam’s, and it is easy to see why. I just tried the New England; it was made in the traditional style with clam broth, creme, clams, potatoes, bacon, onion, and thyme. It was a delicious chowder; I appreciated that it was light on the cream as that makes it much easier to eat with a meal.

We got the lobster stew, clam chowder and the crab sandwich.Everything was good, lobster stew has a very buttery and creamy taste. Our menu is inspired by the farm-to-table concept, featuring modern takes on rustic comfort food. Enjoy Midwestern-raised USDA Prime Aged Black Angus beef -- and fresh seafood, flown in daily -- cooked over an open, mesquite wood-fired grill. When possible, we work with local farmers, craftsmen and other artisan purveyors to bring you the freshest ingredients. Named for legendary Kansas City restaurateur Joe Gilbert, our top-rated steak restaurant stands as a hometown tribute to the hospitality icon himself.

Spellbinder and Valley Beer also won medals at the Australian International Beer Awards in May. The space has about 2,200 square feet inside that will feature communal seating and a 1,000-square-foot north-facing patio, which will be dog-friendly. The menu is still in the works, but there will be no servers; bar bites will be available from walk-up windows. In Arcadia, Ingo’s has burgers, cocktails by the carafe, and outdoor seating that’s perfect for lunch on sunny days.

And the booze selection will appeal to both sommeliers and the average working man or woman. Going back to the Liquor Wheel is as natural as the Circle of Life. Co-owner Drew Pool of Phoenix said they plan to expand the patio and keep the existing private dining room, and they’ll build a large island bar inside serving Wren House beers and handpicked European imports.

Best Late-Night Dining

By now, many drinkers have heard the legend of Atsuo Sakurai, a sake brewer who traded Japan for Holbrook and painstakingly crafts Arizona Sake — at first out of his garage, now out of a modest sake brewery. Sakurai's standard sake, his junmai ginjo, is indeed excellent. But one of his rarer bottles, Desert Snow, is even better. In the bottle, this gray-white unfiltered rice brew looks about as cloudy as fresh-squeezed lemonade. All of that extra sediment brings an unreal, milky goodness. Sometimes you can find this sake on higher-end menus around town, but you might have to head to Holbrook.

Helton Boysenberry Sour

We've been going there since the late '80s, and if you're a longtime Phoenician, you've probably been there, too. The Aranki family bought it in 1999 and added title loans to its repertoire, but little else has changed. Its offbeat name, which apparently refers to its drive-thru and is emblazoned in blue-and-red neon, has always made the place stand out as the gritty liquor store it is. The location in south-south-Arcadia is perfect for all the low-rent apartments in the area.

Wren House is a welcome change from that standard. In the Green Gables neighborhood in Midtown, the taproom was once a 1920s bungalow and is a perfect place to stop by for one beer and then forget what time it is four hours later. Their beer is exceptional, and they’re constantly incorporating local flavors, like Sinagua malt, Arizona wheat, and local citrus.

Longtime craft beer maestro Todd Helton uses 88 pounds of Oregon boysenberries for every batch of his Boysenberry Sour. This brew, the best staple at Helton (yes, better than the pilsner), is made for sipping or flat-out crushing under the desert sun. It's bright and crisp with a rounded tartness and the lush, mellow fruit of the berries blushing through. Somehow, it seems to take on a new personality based on the food you eat while enjoying a bottle or two. Sours are a difficult style, and Helton has cemented his year-round staple as the most memorable version made in Phoenix. Exposed industrial piping, large picnic tables, and bearded guys trying to explain what beer is to the bartender must all be part of some brewery handbook.

Tracking Ian: How it will impact the Carolinas, and when

hurricane ian charlotte impact

Hurricane Ian, one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the U.S., made landfall on Florida's Gulf coast on Wednesday afternoon. Ian's 150-mph winds and heavy rains knocked out power for 2.6 million residents as it continued to batter its way across the Sunshine State. Ian is expected to begin affecting North Carolina as soon as Thursday evening. Residents in North Carolina can experience potential impacts such as significant rainfall statewide, gusty winds, flash flooding and storm surge in coastal counties, according to state officials.

Some Florida cities are suspending municipal services in preparation for the storm

As of this morning, about 3,400 nursing home residents were evacuated across 44 facilities on the state’s west coast. “Over the next day, it will be vital for everyone to be prepared to act if told to do so by your local public safety officials," Stenson said. Pratt is a student at the University of Central Florida and had come home to ride out the storm with his parents after his classes were cancelled. While his family home suffered some damage, they were able to stay safe and sheltered. A day after creating historic flooding in Florida and leaving much of the state without power, Ian is out over the Atlantic and heading toward South Carolina, where it is expected to make its second U.S. landfall on Friday.

Hurricane Ian still has sustained winds of 155 mph – which is a category four "major hurricane." Cape Coral, on Florida’s southwestern coast, suspended emergency services and closed city offices, while Lee County canceled school.

Disney World says it plans to resume normal operations on Friday

A hurricane warning was issued for the South Carolina coast and extended to Cape Fear on the southeastern coast of North Carolina. With tropical-storm force winds reaching about 415 miles (665 kilometers) from its center, Ian was forecast to shove storm surge of 5 feet (1.5 meters) into coastal areas in Georgia and the Carolinas. Rainfall of up to 8 inches (20 centimeters) threatened flooding from South Carolina to Virginia.

Even areas not in immediate danger from Hurricane Ian were preparing for the possible impacts of the storm. After the storm passes you'll probably want to haul out your portable generator, if you have one. Here are some of the resources you can use to stay informed as the storm progresses. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said at a briefing early Wednesday afternoon that "not every power outage will be created equal across the state in the next few days."

Study first to use LiDAR, aerial imagery to remotely assess structural damage and beach structural changes

Florida is expected to receive 10 to 20 inches of rain for this event, along with six to nine feet of storm surge, and wind gusts over 100 mph. Ian is now projecting tropical storm-force winds up to 415 miles from its center. The storm currently has maximum sustained winds of 65 mph, with gusts as high as 70 mph. It’s heading northeast at only 8 mph, a slow pace that heightens the risk of flood-inducing rainfall. “If you haven’t yet made plans for every contingency, this afternoon is the time to do so,” McMaster said in a news release.

Hurricane Ian has dropped down to Category 2 as it moves over the Florida peninsula, but forecasters are warning that the massive storm will likely dump heavy rain on inland communities, causing widespread flooding. Jacksonville International Airport has canceled all its flights for Thursday and closed its terminal. The airport had remained open as Hurricane Ian approached and had said it would try to stay open. City water service has been restored, but for the next three days residents should still continue to boil water before consuming it, the city said. Officials in North Port, Florida, issued a citywide curfew for residents Thursday night amid flooding from Hurricane Ian.

Procession to Catawba County honors fallen corrections officer

Two coastal counties that were hit the hardest — Lee County and Charlotte County — are “basically off the grid at this point,” Gov. Ron DeSantis said in a news conference. A coastal sheriff’s office reported that it was getting many calls from people trapped in flooded homes. Desperate people posted to Facebook and other social sites, pleading for rescue for themselves or loved ones. North Carolina is preparing for heavy rainfall and possible flooding on Friday and Saturday from the remnants of Ian.

According to the statement, residents should seek refuge in an interior room in the home, putting as many walls between them and the outdoors. People should stay away from windows and skylights, and beware of calm conditions when the eye of the storm passes over. O’Connor also said the city is enhancing penalties for those charged with property crimes during the storm, pointing to two people arrested Tuesday night outside an IKEA furniture store. The strongest hurricane by recorded wind speed was the Labor Day storm of 1935, which registered 185 mph at landfall, according to Klotzbach's data.

At one point during the storm, they found a man standing in the pelting rain, holding bags of his belongings. When he ran for president in 2016, Jeb Bush, a two-term governor, frequently highlighted Florida’s hurricane preparedness and rebuilding efforts under his leadership. Mr. DeSantis’s immediate predecessor, Rick Scott, burnished a somewhat awkward public persona while shepherding Florida through a series of hurricanes during his tenure. On Wednesday morning, the president made a point to announce that he had been in touch with Mr. DeSantis. At a briefing early Wednesday evening, Mr. DeSantis noted that he had spoken with the president the day before.

The National Hurricane Center is imploring people to go inside and stay there. Some city officials said they believed that as many as half of the city’s 205,000 residents may have decided to stay in their homes, despite mandatory evacuation orders for much of the city that had been issued on Tuesday. The brunt of the storm was initially expected to hit farther north, in Tampa. Some areas of Fort Myers are under three to four feet of water, and the city is responding to fires, extensive flooding and life-threatening conditions, the city said in a Facebook post Wednesday night. People posted pleas on Facebook throughout the night, seeking help rescuing loved ones across the city.

But tropical hurricanes and storms affecting Florida between June and November are not covered because the company considers them foreseeable. Throughout Florida, many airports have closed and some hotels have begun preparing to accept evacuees instead of tourists. As of Wednesday afternoon, Hurricane Ian had already contributed to the cancellation of more than 4,000 flights, most within Florida, according to Kathleen Bangs, a spokeswoman for FlightAware, a flight-tracking company. “The biggest stunt was Biden coming in as president and reversing Trump’s policies,” Mr. DeSantis told reporters in Florida days later. He also suggested that the next plane of immigrants might land in Delaware, near the president’s weekend home.

The State Emergency Response Team will activate Thursday at the State Emergency Operations Center in Raleigh and plans to move to 24-hour operations on Friday morning. South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency in anticipation of Ian moving north into the state. The price gouging law is in effect, Attorney General Josh Stein announced Wednesday after Gov. Cooper issued a state of emergency.

That is the total number of Florida households that are without any power as of early Wednesday morning according according to PowerOutage.us. National Guard troops were being positioned in South Carolina to help with the aftermath, including any water rescues. On Thursday afternoon, a steady stream of vehicles left Charleston, a 350-year-old city. The hurricane is predicted to move across Florida to the Atlantic Ocean, where it's expected to regain strength over water and begin to approach the South Carolina coast Thursday. Gov. Ron DeSantis called the storm a "500-year flooding event." President Joe Biden declared a major disaster in Florida on Thursday.

The storm is expected to make landfall near Port Charlotte on Wednesday afternoon. Ian struck Florida with 150 mph (241 kph) winds that tied it for the fifth-strongest hurricane ever to hit the U.S. Emergency crews sawed through toppled trees to reach stranded people.

REI also has excellent “how to” articles and videos that answer common questions. In the end, we really value companies that make an effort to go beyond the basic specs, as it can be instrumental in nailing down the finer details—particularly important for a gear-intensive sport like snowboarding. If you pride yourself on finding the best deals possible, look no further than The House. The site is noticeably less polished and harder to navigate than Evo above and Backcountry and REI below—it feels pretty busy and convoluted—but the product specifications and descriptions are detailed and well-sorted.

The House Snowboard Shop’s closure marks the end of an era in the snowboarding scene. As we bid farewell to The House Snowboard Shop, we must remember the legacy they’ve left behind.

Denver’s ADU Program

Choose between mittens and gloves from Crab Grab and Howl to keep your hands safe. Get the gear you’re looking for and keep your gear as stylish as your riding. Snowboard binding technology has come a long way since we started in ‘99. From Burton’s Step-On system to Union’s Exoframe 4.0 straps, there’s tons of options for the latest tech.

For example, most burdened renters in Grand Junction or Pueblo need rents below $815 and those in Colorado Springs would struggle if they exceeded $914 for a one-bedroom. State and local action beyond zoning would be necessary to help ADUs reach these families. One in five Colorado seniors are already “doubled up” with family or another household, according to Colorado Futures Center. But those over 65 are overwhelmingly homeowners, so they’d be giving up equity and stability to rent. Only 15% of ADU occupants in California are older adults.

Some rippers want to hit steep, backcountry lines at full speed and need a board that can turn on a dime. Those riders will want to check out freeride and powder boards. Others like to lap the park and hit jibs, which means they need a board that can flex enough to give them the pop they need. The most common type of rider is the weekend warrior who rides a little bit of everything and may not want to pack around multiple boards. The best boards for those riders will be all-mountain boards, boards that do excel in all types of terrain.

One of snowboarding’s predominant shops is facing liquidation. People who write reviews have ownership to edit or delete them at any time, and they’ll be displayed as long as an account is active. The chat window is nonexistent, the hotline number is busy. I couldn't get a hold of customer support other than a generic automated email.

If Colorado eventually got to the pace of California’s current statewide production it would be 3,500 to 5,000 ADUs per year statewide. The best prospects for low- and moderate-income homeowner ADUs would be more affordable and less noticeable basement conversions or additions, not detached units. Another legitimate concern is whether upzoning will make low- and moderate-income communities of color more vulnerable to developer speculation and exacerbate displacement. Permitting in heavily Latino Los Angeles has been strong, in part with retroactive permitting of previous illegal garage or basement conversions.

Finding the right snowboarding gear to meet your needs is a gamechanger, but it isn’t always easy to know exactly what you want. Luckily we stock all kinds of snowboards from the top companies and brands in the game so you can shop confidently. What started out as a necessity for western Oregon shredders in 1999 turned into a worldwide hub for snowboarders everywhere.

Their success has been attributed to larger homes, higher median income, and a higher rate of older homeowners, some of whom move into an ADU they financed to be near grandkids in the main house. These indicators point to market ADUs as an important choice for a modest percentage of Colorado seniors with adequate means. Once you have the big three components to snowboarding, get kitted with the latest outerwear. From Gore-Tex jackets, pants and bibs, to goggles that feature the newest tech in on-snow optics.

During the holidays, and particularly leading up to Christmas, most retailers also offer expedited shipping at no additional cost, which can be a real help during busier retail times. Online shopping comes with its fair share of drawbacks, including not being able to try on or see products in person before you buy. With that in mind, we give a lot of credit to retailers that provide detailed and comprehensive product specifications and information. Most list the basic facts (weight and materials), which are passed along from the manufacturers. Other sites like Evo do a particularly nice job of going above and beyond, with detailed buying advice sections and sizing guides for ensuring you’re getting the right fit.
